RE:
Can
You
Afford Not to Tour?
Dear
fellow music industry friend,
Thank you for signing up for my “Taking
Your Show on the Road: How to Plan the Perfect, Money-Making
Tour” mini-course. Over the next several days you will be
receiving additional installments in this series. If you are
truly serious about succeeding “out on the road,” I hope you
will take time to read each one carefully. In fact, it would
probably be a good idea to print each installment and save it
so that you can refer to it in the future.
In this, the first installment of the
“Taking Your Show on the Road: How to Plan the Perfect,
Money-Making Tour” mini-course, we are going to discuss “Can
You Afford Not to Tour?”
Is touring for you? Can you afford it?
Will you make enough money to make it worth the hassle?
Probably the best place to begin is to
try and figure out why you would want to tour in the first
place. You probably have a set of clubs you’ve been doing
for awhile locally, and really can’t imagine why you’d want to
add travel expenses to You are already high overhead. Truth be
told, it’s precisely because you find yourself in that
situation that you should consider touring. Let’s face it.
Most of the clubs around the country are used to paying
bottom of the barrel
prices for their bands. They cater to local guys who
can’t wait to get their stage time, and
they treat you that way.
The bigger clubs
- the ones willing to pay for touring bands
-
don’t usually consider local groups. And they really
shouldn’t. Why should a club owner pay you $1200 for a night
when he knows all the locals have been watching you play at
that $400 club down the street? How could he possibly consider
making his typical $10 cover charge when you’ve been working
at $2 a person? If you have a local reputation of being a
bargain basement band, it’s going to be hard to suddenly get
into the bigger clubs. And if you do, you’re probably only
going to get a week or two a year. If you do the math, two
$1200 shows may be good for your ego, but they won’t pay as
much rent as 40 $400 shows will.
If you want to consistently make the
higher scale, you’re going to have to go to where the clubs
are willing to pay for it. When you do, you’re going to
discover a really strange phenomenon. For some reason, nobody
believes anybody important lives in their town (unless you
happen to live in Chicago, L.A., or New York City). If a club
owner - or even club patrons
- think of you as the “local” band,
you’ll find you’ll never quite match up to the “big guys” from
out of town. Well, the same is true when you start traveling.
The fact that you can advertise that you’re from somewhere
else suddenly makes you sound like a pro.
If you
can call a club owner and tell them you’re booking a tour and
will be passing through his town on a given week,
you will score
far more brownie points than if you tell a local owner you live in
town and would like to work anytime there’s an opening.
Any club willing to hire a touring
band realizes they have expenses. They can’t afford to stay
on the road unless they’re making enough to pay all their
bills (both traveling and back home). If you’re touring, you
can’t afford to have a day job, unless you’re a writer or some
other profession you can take along with you.
I hope this installment has been
informative for you! Don’t forget, more installments are on
their way. In fact, you should be receiving your next
installment, “How to Organize the ‘Perfect’ Tour”, shortly.
Sincerely,
Ty Cohen

Dear Mr.

informative that I read the ENTIRE Book, Till 4

Professional drummer for 34 yrs. and have toured
extensively, I have NEVER seen such a valuable
compilation of material and insider knowledge in
one place, many I had forgotten some I never had a
chance to use, and some I was not aware of (many
times NOT being the one in charge and when I
suggested some of them I got "What do YOU know YOU
are JUST the Drummer") THANK YOU for putting this
out. This SHOULD be a MUST READ for Everybody that
is serious about the Music Business or planning to
be in it.
Thank You
and I look forward to hearing from you.

The Industry Yellow Pages!
I know a great resource when I see it. I'm probably the oldest musician in
Ty's library. I started playing for money in the 6th grade. I didn't start
writing until 1987. This collection of yellow pages encompasses all the
catagories of needs for the aspiring writer-musician. I've been submitting songs
to publishers the old fashioned way and inevitably get invitations from "sharks"
to pay them to redo and rewrite my songs. The Yellow Pages allows you to
circumvent the myriad 'hot spots' for song submissions. I play jazz and write
country and rock and roll. (You need to write for the market). I have a degree
in music and write in my mind all the time. I write either music, lyrics or
both. I have worked with collaborators in all phases of this craft. It is also
important to have a decent contract with co-writers to spell out the agreement
you need to have, as these will vary with each person. The Yellow Pages gives me
the names of those to submit my various works. Each song can be played in a
different style, so it is important to submit the right kind of song to the
different resources spelled out in the Yellow Pages. I've previously used a
yearly book that listed places to submit songs to but found that they aren't
really interested as the book suggests. The Yellow Pages are the real thing. You
need to read all of it and follow their protocols for submissions. I feel that
the Yellow Pages has put me on the right track. I want to thank Ty for pointing
me in the right way, and incidently, he will also send an occasional hot tip to
you and me when he gets one. Thanks Ty. ETB
