Determining Your ‘On the Road’ Budget
Dear
fellow music industry friend,
Here is the next installment of the
“Taking Your Show on the Road: How to Plan the Perfect,
Money-Making Tour” mini-course. In this installment, we are
going to discuss “Determining Your ‘On the Road’ Budget”.
One last consideration you’ll need to
work out before you start making calls to clubs is exactly how
much it’s going to cost you to live for a week.
How many people are in your band? How
much will meals cost? How many hotel rooms will you need to
pay for along the way? How much will gas and vehicle upkeep
cost?
Add an extra 20% or so to whatever total
you come up with for a week's run to keep around in case of
emergencies. Once you figure out how much your expenses will
be, then you need to figure out salaries. If, say, your
overhead will work out to about $900 a week and each of the 5
band members agrees to work at $200 a week, you now know
you’ll need around $2000 just to break even. If you decide not
to take anything less than $3000 for a week’s work, you’ll end
up making a little extra to put in your promotional and/or
equipment budget for next year. If you do 8 weeks, at that
rate, you’ll end up with $8000 in the band’s promo account.

I know a great resource when I see it. I'm probably the oldest musician in
Ty's library. I started playing for money in the 6th grade. I didn't start
writing until 1987. This collection of yellow pages encompasses all the
catagories of needs for the aspiring writer-musician. I've been submitting songs
to publishers the old fashioned way and inevitably get invitations from "sharks"
to pay them to redo and rewrite my songs. The Yellow Pages allows you to
circumvent the myriad 'hot spots' for song submissions. I play jazz and write
country and rock and roll. (You need to write for the market). I have a degree
in music and write in my mind all the time. I write either music, lyrics or
both. I have worked with collaborators in all phases of this craft. It is also
important to have a decent contract with co-writers to spell out the agreement
you need to have, as these will vary with each person. The Yellow Pages gives me
the names of those to submit my various works. Each song can be played in a
different style, so it is important to submit the right kind of song to the
different resources spelled out in the Yellow Pages. I've previously used a
yearly book that listed places to submit songs to but found that they aren't
really interested as the book suggests. The Yellow Pages are the real thing. You
need to read all of it and follow their protocols for submissions. I feel that
the Yellow Pages has put me on the right track. I want to thank Ty for pointing
me in the right way, and incidently, he will also send an occasional hot tip to
